Simple Remedies to Treat Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

 The urinary system of the body is essential for flushing out the liquid waste from the body through the urethra. However, there are times when germs enter the urinary tract and affect the bladder. This can cause mild to severe infection known as the urinary tract infection or UTI. Usually antibiotics are prescribed for these infections. However, apart from the medications, it is necessary to have several home treatment and daily routines that helps in curing these UTI problems.

Why UTI occurs?

There are several reasons why UTI occurs.

The bacteria from large intestines and stool can get through the urethra to cause infection. Sexual intercourse in women can also be the reason for bacteria source to enter the urinary tract. People with indwelling Catheters or hospitalized people are most often prone to bacterial infection. Bacteria from blood can also cause UTI infections. In men, kidney stones or enlarged prostates may cause infections. UTI infections limit the body’s ability to urinate.

Symptoms for Urinary tract infection

  1. Burning sensation or pain when urinating
  2. Feeling to urinate often, though not much comes
  3. Back pain or heavy feeling in belly
  4. Foul smelling cloudy urine usually accompanied with puss
  5. Fever or chills with nausea and vomiting

Take immediate treatment or medications if you have infection, particularly for pregnant women, elderly people, and hospitalized patients.

Simple Remedies for UTI

Increase Fluid Intake

The best remedy for UTI is water intake. Increase your water consumption to allow yourself to have frequent urination. This will help in flushing out the bacteria. If you are worried of drinking plain water, have flavored water or fruit juices. Avoid alcohol or soda.

Baking soda

The alkaline nature of Baking soda helps in neutralizing the acidic effects of urine infection.

Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 250gms of fresh water and stir well. Drink this glass of soda water every morning.

Parsley water

Parsley has diuretic properties and helps in eliminating discomfort caused by UTI.

Take 1 cup of fresh parsley or 2 tablespoons of dried parsley. Boil 2 cups of water and add the parsley to it. Let the leaves infuse into the water for 10 minutes. Strain it and drink hot. You can also refrigerate and drink it as an iced tea.

Cranberry juice

Cranberry juice is an effective home remedy for those with reoccurring infections. If preferred, you can also take cranberry supplement.

Drink one glass of cranberry juice three times a day.

Ginger tea

Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and deals good for UTI problems. It thereby, prevents inflammation, and reduces pain. You can take ginger tea twice a day.

A word for Care

  • Avoid the 4 C’s – citrus, chocolate, caffeine, and carbonated drinks.
  • You can have hot bag massage, if you experience pain or discomfort in belly.
  • Do not hold urine and do frequent urination to empty the bladder bacteria.
  • Women must urinate after sexual intercourse as a hygienic habit.
