Home Remedies for Headache

Headache is one such universal body symptom that could be attributed to myriad problems. It is one of the common health problems in every household, affecting everyone at one time or another.The reason for headache can be anything from as simple as a dehydration to a serious emotional/psychological issues. Whatever, the causes of a headache can vary from person to person depending on their lifestyle, body condition, physiological changes, habits and medications. While people use over-the-counter prescriptions for getting relief from headaches, there are some simple natural remedies that could help treat headache. You can try out these headache home remedies at home to relive quickly and easily.

Headaches include tension headaches, migraines and cluster headaches. Some of the common causes for headache are constriction of blood vessels, genetic reason, excessive smoking and drinking, dehydration, oversleeping or sleeplessness, pain killer medications, eye problems and all the more. However finding the actual reason behind the headache helps a lot. For instance, if you have headache because of dehydration, drinking 8-10 glasses of water alleviates the problem. Likewise, many other natural ingredients can be used for treating different kinds of headache.

Headache Home Remedies

Ice bag

Ice bag is one of the easiest ways to get immediate relief from headache. It has numbing effect on the pain and also the cold from ice helps to reduce inflammation and so you will get relief from headache.

Take a washcloth and dip it into ice-cold water. Now place it over your head for about five minutes. Do this process for several times.

You can also use ice bag instead of this, place and ice bag to the back of your neck for few minutes. This will helps to get relief from a migraine headache.

Simply you can use frozen vegetable bags or frozen rice as a cold compress. By doing this you can get relief from headache within half an hour.

Ginger

Ginger is a great remedy for headache. It can help to reduce the inflammation of blood vessels in the head, and so help to get immediate relief from a headache.

You can simply chew one or two pieces of ginger candy or take equal part of lemon juice and ginger juice and mix them and drink this juice once or twice a day.

Take one teaspoon of dry ginger powder and mix it with two teaspoons of water. Now apply this paste on your forehead for few minutes.

Apples

Apples and apple cider vinegar helps to get rid of headache. It helps to balance the alkaline and acid level in the body, giving relief to headaches caused due to such imbalances.

Take a glass of plain water and then add two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar into it. Now drink this water to get relief from headache. Alternatively you can also eat apple with some salt.

Rosemary

Rosemary is one of the effective remedy for headache. The anti-inflammatory property of rosemary oil helps treat headache as it contains rosmarinic acid.

Rosemary leaves – 1 tsp

Crushed sage leaves – 1 tsp

Water – 1 cup

Take some rosemary leaves and crushed sage leaves in a pan. Now add one cup of water into it and allow it to boil for about 10 minutes. Cover it while boiling and then allow it to cool. Now strain the water and drink it. You can drink this herbal rosemary tea two to three times a day.

You can simply take few drops of rosemary oil and mix it with a tablespoon of carrier oil and massage this oil on your forehead for few minutes.

Note: For those who are having high blood pressure, this rosemary oil is not suitable for them.

Basil

Basil helps to treat mild headaches caused by muscles tension. It also has calming and analgesic effects.

Add one tablespoon of basil leaves or few drops of basil oil into a cup of boiling water and inhale the steam coming from it.

Alternatively, you can simply chew some fresh basil leaves or massage your forehead using basil oil mixed with base oil helps to get relief from headache.

Take three fresh basil leaves and put them into a cup of boiling water and allow it to boil for few minutes in simmer. Strain the water and drink it by adding little honey will help to get relief from headache.

Lavender oil

Lavender oil is also an effective remedy for tension headache. You can simply smell the scent of lavender essential oil to get some relief. This remedy also helps to improve migraine symptoms.

Take few drops of lavender essential oil and mix it with one tablespoon of carrier oil such as olive oil or almond oil and apply it on your forehead and gently massage it for about few minutes.

Alternatively, add few drops of lavender essential oil into two cups of boiling water and inhale the steam coming from it.

Simply you can also take few drops of lavender essential oil on a tissue paper and inhale it. Never take lavender oil orally.

Peppermint oil

Like lavender essential oil, peppermint oil also help to get relief from headache. It contains menthol that helps to open up clogged blood vessels, so that you can get relief from headaches.

Add few drops of peppermint essential oil into two cups of boiling water and inhale the steam coming from it for a few minutes.

Alternatively, you can take three drops of peppermint essential oil and mix it with one tablespoon of almond oil, olive oil or just water. Now apply this oil on your forehead and massage it for few minutes.

Simply you can also put crushed fresh peppermint leaves on your forehead.

Cloves

Similar to many essential oils used as headache home remedies, clove oil also helps. The cooling and pain-relieving properties in cloves help to ease tension headaches.

Take two drops of clove oil and mix them into a tablespoon of carrier oil and apply this oil on your forehead and gently massage it for few minutes.

Alternatively, you can add two drops of clove oil into two teaspoons of coconut oil and one teaspoon of sea salt and rub this mixture gently on your forehead.

Simply inhale the smell of the crushed clove whenever you have a headache. Repeat this until you get relief from the pain.
